Joe Satriani Long Beach Concert reviews
Great Band But Needed Better Sound Production
Joe is one of my favorite guitarists and I bought tickets way in advance so I could get great seats. Got seats in the Center Floor Section, Row H, 9 & 10, which was in the center only 8 rows from the front of the stage. Band started off with all new members, other than Joe of course, who I had not seen before in previous videos. They turned out to be really great players, especially the drummer and keyboard player. Joe played well and was typical, "Satriani". I had no issue with the performance. However, I did have an issue with the mix and sound production of this concert.
The sound was loud but not balanced well, and being a musician myself I can say that it sounded like everything was coming from stage volume of amps, and the stage monitor system itself, being reflected back into the audience. The only thing I heard out of the front line arrays and subwoofers were just the lower sub bass frequencies. The rest of the mids and little highs I heard were what sounded like the reflection of stage monitors back into the audience causing a lot of phase problems and delay problems that made everything sound like it was jumbled together, with no distinction or clarity of the primary music. I blame the sound production crew for this, not the band. Even though no one sang anything in the band, when Joe stepped up to the mic to make annoucements or credit the players in between songs, you could not understand him because there was a delay on his voice and his voice was not coming through the mains hardly at all. After the first hour, the band took intermission for about 20 minutes or more, probably for that "meet and greet" some ticket holders paid extra for. I looked back at the sound guy and he was just standing there eating popcorn, oblivious to the sound issues me and my son could hear. One good thing was that after intermission the band came back and the sound was better than the earlier portion of the concert, however only slightly better. Plus at that time the drummer came out first and did a fantastic drum solo for about 15 minutes. Then he the keyboard player, and bass player played a really funky jam of which Joe joined in a few minutes later. The majority of the crowd enjoyed the concert and it was a success, but knowing what a stickler for tone and sound Joe Satriani is of his music, I would have though that his PA sound production crew and equipment would have been top notch, unfortunately, that detail of the concert was not.
